The 2000 United Methodist General Conference will meet in Cleveland
May 2-12, 2000
Will we enter the new millennium with
a split of The United Methodist Church?
As delegates to the General Conference are
preparing to meet in Cleveland in May, the question being expressed by United Methodists
across the U.S. is whether or not our denomination will mark the dawning of a new
millenium by a major division or defection. Individual laity, clergy, and, increasingly,
entire congregations, are unwilling to prolong the present situation. The current
controversy over homosexual practice, lifestyle, and ministry has overwhelmed the mission
of the United Methodist Church. Many feel that they are being forced to choose between
their Christian conscience and their loyalty to the denomination. Delegates to the General
Conference have both the responsiblity and the opportunity to deal with these matters
directly and clearly.
