Accountability Coalition Files Complaint Against UM Church and Society Mag For Promoting Homosexuality
|November 28, 2000
Sandra Lackore, General Secretary
We would like to call your attention to the November/December issue of Christian Social Action, the bi-monthly magazine of the General Board of Church and Society. This magazine's cover asks the question: "Which Church Honors Jesus?" On one side of a scale is pictured a circle of people around a table carrying a banner that says: "All Welcome." The other side of the scale shows a church on which there is a banner that says: "Some Are Welcome."
The meaning of this cover is made clear by the contents of the magazine, which include at least ten articles urging in some form the acceptance of homosexual behavior. The authors of these articles include the officers of caucus groups that are lobbying to change our church's teaching on marriage and sexuality. Although the text from The Book of Discipline explaining The United Methodist Church's opposition to homosexual practiced is printed as a sidebar, there are no articles in this magazine defending or explaining the church's position.
The overall goal of this issue of Christian Social Action, it seems apparent to us, is to advocate for the acceptance of homosexual behavior. This would seem to be a violation of the Disciplinary prohibition against church funding "to promote the acceptance of homosexuality." Currently the General Board of Church and Society spends about $62,000 a year to publish 3000 copies of Christian Social Action every other month. The Board plans to expand the circulation to 50,000 issues next year, raising the annual cost to $170,000.
As The Discipline charges the General Council on Finance and Administration to uphold the Disciplinary prohibition against church funding for pro-homosexuality advocacy, we urge you to investigate this matter and to ensure that The Discipline is enforced. Thank you for your attention.
