Texas UM Lesbian Wedding Elicits Bishop's Comment But No Action

One of our sources reports that Bishop J. Woodrow Hearn of the Texas Conference, where Bering Memorial UMC is located, issued this statement after the service last night:

"The United Methodist Church seeks to minister to the needs of all persons and all people are welcome in our churches. However, the rules of our church provide that a union service between same sex partners shall not be performed in our churches nor shall our ministers conduct such services.

"If a clergy person is accused of being in violation of this rule, the laws of The United Methodist Church provide a process whereby the complaint is addressed. This same process also determines what action shall be taken."
