CONFESSING MOVEMENT GATHERING
| NEWS FROM THE FRONT Dateline: September 3, 1999 CONFESSING MOVEMENT
GATHERING THEME FOR THE
MEETING Many people are asking the same question: "What are we going to do to bring peace to our denomination and renew our evangelical witness?" Perhaps you have read written reports or seen TV coverage concerning recent events at the Des Plaines Campground. We have watched in dismay as the campground's reputation has been dragged through the mud and its character brought into question by the secular media and even by our own United Methodist Reporter. An ordained Elder within our conference has even publicly stated that the campground is "unholy ground". We find this kind of personal attack offensive and insulting. We are therefore calling all evangelicals within the conference to join us in defending the campgrounds long and honorable reputation. The campground has been at the forefront of Methodist evangelical witness for 140 years preaching salvation and commitment to Jesus Christ. But today, because they stand in support of our Book of Discipline, they are facing both legal charges and conference rebuke. What is happening is not an issue of discrimination, but an attempt to silence their witness and punish them for supporting the authority of scripture. The question I have for you is this: How long will evangelicals stand by and do nothing? Our denomination is badly in need of reform and The Confessing Movement is providing a vehicle for that reform. We are growing stronger every day. Since its beginning in 1994, over 600, 125 individuals have signed their names in support of the movement. Come and hear more about The Confessing Movement and what it is doing to help bring peace and unity to the United Methodist Church. SCHEDULED SPEAKERS Rev. Scott Field & Rev. Kent L.
