The Jesus Seminar in the Northern Illinois Conference

by Michael L. Gonzalez

Since C. Joseph Sprague, who currently is in the position of bishop in the NIC, is said to be teaching the heresy of the Jesus Seminar, it might be worth the time to know what the Jesus Seminar teaches.  If you have any contact with Northern Illinois Conference leadership or activities, or contact with Garrett Seminary, the beliefs of the Jesus Seminar might sound familiar to what you've been hearing.

You might want to begin your reading with a brief synopsis of the beliefs of the Jesus Seminar with rebuttal from the Christian Research Institute.

Next, here's information that is actually from the Jesus Seminar own website (but with my own flair for the dramatic):

The Jesus Seminar folks have announced their latest
determinations, such as:  Jesus will NOT return someday and
usher in a new age; there's a 66% likelihood that the Church
needn't survive, as the future of Jesus' vision and
influence isn't tied to the Church; the symbol of the cross
should be reinterpreted to avoid connotations of the blood
atonement; God does NOT intervene in history in response to
petitionary prayer; ministers and priests are NOT special
brokers of God's grace; and my top favorite (drum-roll
please) . . . . the Bible does NOT contain a consistent
timeless standard of ethical behavior.

Go ahead, click on the Jesus Seminar website; read it for yourself--don't take my word for it!

And finally, let's not think that the Jesus Seminar is far from home, as it was PRESENTED AS LEGITIMATE AT FUMC, DOWNERS GROVE, IL on a Friday and Saturday night in October of 1999. According to the October 22, 1999 NIC UMReporter:

"Professor C. M. Kempton Hewitt,
former pastor of NIC, is one of two featured Fellows of the
Westar Institute's Jesus Seminar who will conduct a "Jesus
Seminar on the Road" at First UMC, Downers Grove . . . Joining
Hewitt, who served churches in Naperville and Roscoe, is Dr.
Bernard Brandon Scott, Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New
Testament at the Phillips Theological Seminary on the campus
of Univ of Tulsa.  He is a widely recognized expert on the
interpretation of the parables of Jesus and a charter member
of the Jesus Seminar.  Hewitt is Riley Professor of Biblical
Interpretation at the Methodist Theological School in
Delaware, OH. . . . "
